Manual/Hand-Held Juicer
Juicing consists of putting fruit pieces or vegetable pieces cut side-down in the center of the juicer and then pressing down to squeeze the foodstuff and moving it back and forth so the fruit or veggie juice will run out of the rind and away from the pulp. The pulp and seeds are collected along the edges of the juicer, and the peel is then thrown away.
Electric Juicer
A power or electric juicer mechanically removes juice from fruits, vegetables, herbs, etc. A correct use consists of placing the article of food within and pressing the button. The juicer then automatically squeezes juice out of the food. Due to its mechanical nature, electric juicers are typically far more dangerous than manual types, and thus it is important that users be trained how to correctly make use of them.
Two kinds of electric juicers are on the market:
Centrifugal juicers - these contain a blade and sieve to separate juice and pulp from peels or outer shells or casings. Centrifugal juicers are not able to break fibers in food, so their use is limited.
Masticating juicers - these "chew up" the entire piece of food before, or to be able to, squeeze juice from the inside. Once the food becomes mangled, the juice naturally flows out. Masticating juicers can break fibers in food, so they really have a much wider use than centrifugal juicers.
By the way, power juicers and blenders are different in functionality and purpose. Electric (masticating) juicers can easily separate liquid from fibres, whereas blenders, like centrifugal and manual juicers, cannot.
The theory is that since fast-moving mechanical parts of an electric juicer blow air into the food, triggering greater and quicker oxidation to essential nutrients, electric powered juicers, especially those having variable speeds, are considered to be of higher quality than manual juicers. This has not been confirmed, despite the fact that it is a widespread belief.
